I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. Yeah, I ran right out there. While I was with him we did the Pinupsalbum, and Diamond Dogs. When there's a soloist happening out front, I can push him along, and then when it comes to my solo, I can do whatever the hell I want, which is basically the way I like to do it. Okay. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. Thats what I want to be doing. I think that he brings the realness to even the old material. Have you followed whats gone on since then, at all? I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. But I needed to go home. Cause I just believe in their sincerity. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. Did you enjoy working with another drummer? AD: In my solo, yeah. As bizarre as it sounds, I felt like nothing had ever happened, like our arc of success almost didnt exist. Same for the bass. I was on an ELP tour, and Carl Palmer was using a sequencer, so he had that happening. I still felt this panic to get a deal, get signed, maybe make another record. They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. So I did. I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. AD: There's always the chance. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. We were all lovin it. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. As soon as you get stuck into counting, you forget what is happening out front. But once we started, Gene [Simmons], Paul and Bob Ezrin went, We think theres a good chemistry., Producer Ezrin called Coopers manager, Shep Gordon, and asked to cut a deal. I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. Its called a band! Then shortly thereafter, I called Jon and Neal together. I had to cool out a little bit. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. And every now and then hed look at me and go, What the fuck, yknow? I've been collecting material for it. We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. It might change a little bit in the middle, but there's a definite lead-off and a definite end. Schon and Herbert flew to Los Angeles to meet with the noted sideman for . I was going to the fair in my home town. Nothing was more important than being part of this huge family called Journey. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. You made one more record together. But then, the grass is always greener. RM: Earlier, you mentioned that you don't..like playing songs note for note the same every time. I had always sort of planned to go, but I wasnt sure I was gonna go, you know what I mean? Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. At first, I was scared about really doing it, because I thought, "What would it be like to be muscle-bound and go on stage? My sister started playing guitar at that time, and I didn't want to be in competition with her, so I decided there must be something else I would like. That's basically what it's all about. That everybodys a dreamer on some level? While all of that was going on, Zappa came to town and left a message for me to talk to him. And if I am around people that are messed up, you wont see me there too long, cause it reminds me too much of what I probably looked like. Call it anything. And Jon Cain and I used to spend hours together, doing lyrics. Cause we didnt sound alike. Anything worth anything goes down the path of discussion, disagreement and greatness, I think. I like doing all of that. I believe I was a functioning alcoholic. And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. He has the ability of playing perfectly many different styles: jazz (yes, jazz! And these two girls were there with a friend. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. For about six months, I worked with just a snare drum. I use it to find out how I'm playing-where I rush or where I slow down. And people didnt understand what that meant. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. When you see a Journey song turn up on a movie soundtrack, or on TV? I don't feel I'm perspiring my energy away, like I used to. Just lettin the wind kinda blow through me, and just trying to figure a little bit out, how much of me is in there, still, as opposed to what I became? AD: The guys in the Starship know how to lock in and play as a band. The substitute would not know the charts, would not be able to solo or ad-lib or anything else. I said, . AD: Yes, less overtones and more solid "thump," which is what I'm after. doing all these great solos, but the band was always playing the same level of intensity behind him. Enjoy!
